this is exactly what the beginning of "The Subtle Knife" by Phillip Pullman was. basically the character Will Parry was walking along a highway and he sees a cat from across the street. so the cat seems to find something, paws at it, and then suddenly disappears. turns out it was a doorway to another world.

so yeah, when i saw that i thought it was pretty much the exact same scene.
